Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Hugo Race

Post  Spellbound Sat 17 May - 18:42

http://www.last.fm/music/Hugo+Race wrote:
Melbourne-born multi-instrumentalist, producer, performer and songwriter Hugo Race is an eclectic and prolific artist who has lived and worked in the USA, UK, France, Germany and Italy since 1988. He was a founding member and powerful transient element of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds (1983), with whom he started working in the terminal stages of the legendary Birthday Party (he appears on five cds of the Seed’s catalogue). In Melbourne he founded the Wreckery (1985) who went on to become on of Australia’s seminal cult bands of the 80s, releasing with the White, Rampant, and Citadel labels.

Throughout the 90s, Hugo released a series of nine records under his own name with the Berlin-based musical collective True Spirit for the Normal and Glitterhouse labels, (Germany), culminating in the “Long Time Ago” double-cd retrospective released in 2001. The True Spirit has toured Europe repeatedly, performing on a vast trajectory from the UK to Greece and were literally one of the first western (let alone Australian) acts performing inside the ex- eastern bloc European territories. Recording in diverse situations and locations from Brussels to Bologna, the True Spirit have followed a personal musical vision in a series of mutating line-ups that have fused the boundaries between the “primal” (roots) blues and raw electronica - described by London Sounds as “night music of the soul”, and by Melody Maker as “industrial-trance-blues”.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Autumn Shade

Post  Spellbound Thu 29 May - 16:02

http://www.last.fm/music/Autumn+Shade wrote:Autumn Shade was established in 2002 by singer songwriter Jes Lenee’. She created a band leaning upon the raw, image-filled sounds culled from her travels and thoughts. The concepts of intricate melody and nature immediately began the center of the band and it flourished into a cohesive form; something powerful that feels beautifully weathered and timeless. The band grew from playing private shows with an acoustic guitar, haunting vocals and hand drums for friends to a larger eclectic sound that is still able to remain in that incredibly intimate atmosphere the band so well captures. Since its beginning Autumn Shade has thrived on public performances, with intensely eclectic sounds blended nicely by the band’s live painter, performance artist and pianist, Derick Snow.

About Jes Lenee’
As a young girl she began writing music on piano and guitar in the Midwestern U.S. At seventeen, Jes found the underground poetry readings and art creation gatherings; it was an incredible experience which caused her to follow the path of progress. Her singing has been described as haunting and soothingly beautiful, compared by others in writing and performance to Tori Amos and Connor Oberst. On a live stage, she’ll sometimes change her songs drastically, spontaneously going into the emotional and passionate spirit of the music she’s grasped, but always retaining the true genius of her work.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Agincourt

Post  Spellbound Fri 6 Jun - 0:17

http://www.last.fm/music/Agincourt wrote: The British trio of Agincourt made one rare, privately pressed LP in 1970, Fly Away. It’s nice second-tier British folk-rock, and though the adjective “haunting” is overused in description of this genre in general, songwriters Peter Howell and John Fernando really had that aspect down, with a greater pop savvy than most people working in the U.K. folk-rock field. Woman singer Lee Menelaus rounded out the trio, which smoothly integrated both male and female lead and background vocals.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty BOBB TRIMBLE

Post  h8 Wed 25 Jun - 0:26

"Born ten years too late to attract the attention he deserved, Bobb Trimble created an utterly unique body of work that merged psychedelia, folk-rock, space music and sound effects into rock’s most convincing depiction of a disturbed mind. As with most tortured artistic souls, Bobb’s distinct vision is filled with much more than just fear and self-loathing. It drips with beauty and heartbreak, and his high, fragile voice bleeds with passion. The music evokes the sixties yet sounded contemporary when released in the eighties and again when re-released in the nineties. Bobb’s two impossibly rare albums change hands for ungodly sums of money, and for years his reputation grew among collectors as his music was heard via tape trades (often on unlabeled tapes, which led to one male collector falling in love with the beautiful voice only to be informed that the singer was actually a man). In the mid-90s, Bobb’s music was finally made widely available when the bulk of the two albums were released on CD as Jupiter Transmission. Die-hard fans of psychedelia rate Bobb’s music as the finest in the genre from the 80s."

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Patrick Sky

Post  Spellbound Sun 29 Jun - 20:12

http://www.last.fm/music/Patrick+Sky wrote:Patrick Sky was one of the most enigmatic performers of 1960s folk music. A descendant of the Creek Indian tribe, Sky first attracted attention singing the traditional folk songs that he learned from a grandmother as a child. Sky was equally influenced by the satirical writing of Will Rogers and the topical songs of Woody Guthrie. Beginning with his recordings of the late-1960s, Sky’s songs became increasingly political and outspoken. Sky’s most confrontational album, Songs That Made America Famous, recorded in March 1971, was rejected by several record labels before being released on Sky’s own label, Rainbow Collection, two years later.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty The Pentangle

Post  Spellbound Fri 4 Jul - 14:56

http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/the_pentangle wrote:"Often labelled a folk-rock band, The Pentangle definitely had more focus on folk. Actually, they were unafraid to experiment with different styles of music and in their hands the blues, traditional folk (often stretching back to medieval austerity), soft rock, indian music and jazz converged, both amazingly and very naturally. They struck an excellent balance between instrumental virtuosity and pristine vocals."

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Sam Parry

Post  Spellbound Sat 5 Jul - 19:52

http://folkcatalogue.wordpress.com/2010/04/22/1972-sam-parry-if-sadness-could-sing/ wrote:A mix of finger-picking folky (“puttin’ on my walkin’ shoes”) introspection and up-tempo harmonica blues from Welsh singer-songwriter Sam Parry. Very much of its time – in a Ritchie Havens/Ralph McTell stylee (no criticism). He’s got a good voice and plays a mean moothie. As far as I know, this was the only album he recorded.

I hadn’t been able to find out anything about Sam Parry, then out of the blue (well, out of Brittany) popped Andrew Hawkey.

“Sam used to claim (and still does) that he didn’t really understand where the music was coming from and that he was being visited by some kind of spirit,” says Andrew. “I can vouch for the fact that when he was playing, he would go into a sort of trance, from which he’d wake, with expressions of mild surprise, at the end of a song.”

Andrew had got to know Sam after moving to Wales to become a hippie in 1973.

“I was renting a house in a tiny village in the hills near Aberystwyth called Trefenter. Sam and his then-partner, Sue, lived in a primitive cottage close by, and we struck up a friendship – I was playing some guitar and doing some song-writing at the time, and Sam and I used to ‘jam’ together … we even travelled all the way down to Hampshire to do a folk club gig…

“Sam was an extraordinary self-taught player, and used open tunings of his own invention, in the style of John Martyn. All the harmonica playing on the LP is recorded live, played in a harness: fantastic breath control!”

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty The Jorgs

Post  Spellbound Wed 9 Jul - 15:54

http://www.theancientstar-song.com/2011/04/mark-jorg/ wrote:From that pure and simple ’60s breed of folksinger comes Mt. Angel Abbey student Mark Jorg. He performs ten original songs, usually with just acoustic guitar for backing (a couple songs have assistance from others on flute, second acoustic guitar and female vocal harmony’s. Poetic flowing lyrics, stark atmosphere, competent guitar work, and a convincing tenor voice made for the style add up to a refreshing listening experience. Songs shift around from quiet sensitive moods to bleak minor-key expressions to graceful finger-picked passages to vibrant strummed buildings. Serious tone save for some satirical jabs in ‘Ecology’ (“the war against pollution is going very well, the young protest the old and the old say go to hell”). ‘Master’s Walk’, ‘This Lonely Man’, ‘Man And Wife’, ‘What Have You Done’ and ‘Blind Man’ are some of the other titles. Custom lp from St. Benedict, Oregon. (The Archivist by Ken Scott, 4th Edition).

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 3 Empty Liberal Religious Youth

Post  Spellbound Mon 21 Jul - 22:43

http://www.last.fm/music/Liberal+Religious+Youth wrote:Liberal Religious Youth (LRY) was an autonomous, North American youth organization affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). LRY was unique as a church youth group in that it was governed by its members, who were generally between the ages of fourteen and nineteen years old, with adults serving only in an advisory capacity. Though partial funding and office space were provided by the UUA, primary funding was through an independent endowment, the investment of which was controlled by the LRY board of directors.

LRY was founded in 1954, before the official merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America in 1961, and has roots going back both to the Unitarian Young People’s Religious Union, organized in 1896, and the Universalist Young People’s Christian Union, founded in 1898.

In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, LRYers were seriously involved in the counterculture, civil rights and anti-war movements. At times these radical activities were sanctioned by their elders in the church, but at other times they were condemned. In the 1980s, these activities continued but, along with the rest of the country, the leadership of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) was becoming more conservative, and relations between the leaders of LRY and the UUA became progressively more strained.
