super Aussie garage punk

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Birdman wrote:Radio Birdman was one of the first punk bands in Australia along with The Saints. Deniz Tek and Rob Younger formed the group in Sydney, Australia in 1974. The group influenced the work of many successful, mainstream bands, and is now considered to be one of the most crucial bands to Australia's musical growth, but their main legacy was their towering influence over Australian indie rock in the 1980s

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty Dead Coast

Post  Spellbound Mon 7 Apr - 17:37

https://www.facebook.com/deadcoast/info wrote:Unearthing the delights of surf rock and rolling it up in a laid-back, blues- ridden psych beat, Dead Coast are something of a British counterpart to smooth San Fran rockers Allah-Las. Their EP ‘Seven Deadly Children’ is a four- track nostalgia trip, and they've been building on its success since the summer. (Matthew Fogg, NME Magazine).

Their music would work perfectly as a soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino film, with a laid-back quality that cruised from one song to the next, in a locomotion that emulated the movement of waves. They would be well worth checking out if you’re a fan at all of your quintessential surf rock bands of the 60s or similar new age acts such as The Growlers (SeeSound.co.uk).

Post  Spellbound Mon 14 Apr - 17:51

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Fleshtones wrote:Often tagged as garage-rock revivalists, the Fleshtones mix the fuzz-guitar and Farfisa organ sounds of that genre with rockabilly, ’50s and ’60s R&B, and surf into a potent retro stew the group likes to call “Super Rock.” The group formed in 1976 in Queens with vocalist/keyboardist Peter Zaremba, guitarist Keith Streng, bassist Jan Marek Pukulski, and drummer Bill Milhizer and aimed to return rock and roll to the simplicity and unself-consciousness of the ’50s and early-’60s. (The group was often joined on-stage and in the studio by sax player Gordon Spaeth, who passed on in 2005.

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty Eddy Current Suppression Ring

Post  Spellbound Tue 15 Apr - 19:06

http://www.last.fm/music/Eddy+Current+Suppression+Ring?ac=Eddy%20Current%20S wrote:Eddy Current Suppression Ring is a Melbourne-based Australian rock group which rose to prominence in 2008.

The band formed in 2003 when several band members started jamming at a vinyl pressing plant Christmas party, where they worked. They encouraged now-lead singer Brendan Suppression (real name Brendan Huntly) to ad-lib into a tape recorder. The subsequent tape prompted the band’s first recording, which produced a 7-inch single with A-side Get Up Morning.

The band’s name derived from members recalling another employee at the pressing plant stating he had to fix the eddy current suppression ring - a copper ring around a transformer which subdues eddy currents.

The band’s sound is said to have been influenced by bands such as The Troggs, The Standells, X and The Pagans. Reference has also been made to the band’s Australian delivery, both vocally and musically. In 2006, Eddy Current Suppression Ring released their first full-length recording, an eponymous album released to critical acclaim.

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty The Miners Of Muzo

Post  innocent76 Wed 16 Apr - 22:51

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miners_of_Muzo wrote:The band name was picked out of a short list of names without further meaning (It was also the name of a BBC documentary on the outlaw emerald miners of the Colombian city Muzo).

Pretty much bored of what was going on musically back then, they chose to seek the gut feeling of rock music again. Anti- shoe gazing rock music with lots of electric guitar and organ. On the first album The Birthday Party influences are still evident, but as from the second album APOGEE, the style becomes more melodic and very 60’s influenced.

In 10 years time 7 albums and 5 singles were released and numerous gigs and tours through the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and especially France had followed. They were also the first Dutch rock band to play at SXSW in Austin Texas in 1990.

At the end of the 90s the Miners paused. Feeling it was time for a break. Keyboard player Dan was no longer in the band and lives in Amsterdam. Marc had been playing with American singer Pat Mears but returned to the band in 95. For a while they called themselves Funrazor to see if it was possible to start with a clean slate without any legacy. But then after 2 years they returned to the original name again and started to build a recording studio in their own rehearsal garage. When the studio became better equipped new songs were recorded and the songs from those years are captured in a double CD “Love & Life part II” which is only available as a download on their website www.minersofmuzo.com.

Hans left the country shortly after that and has a new life as a farmer in France. Since 2010 The Miners started playing live again occasionally and they were joined by guitarist Wannes Rombouts and drummer Kasper Dam. The long awaited new album: "Really...is that a fact" has been released in January 2013 (distribution by Clearspot).

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty The Monks

Post  innocent76 Mon 21 Apr - 19:17

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Monks?ac=the%20monks wrote:The Monks (US) are a rock n roll band, primarily active in Germany in the mid to late sixties. They reunited in 1999 and have continued to play concerts, although no new studio recordings have been made. The Monks stood out from the music of the time, and have developed a cult following amongst many musicians and music fans.

Artists to have acknowledged the Monks as an influence include Henry Rollins, the Beastie Boys and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, as well as The Fall. The latter covered both I Hate You and Oh, How To Do Now on their 1990 album Extricate (under the titles Black Monk Theme Part I and Black Monk Theme Part II, respectively), as well as the song Shut Up! on their 1994 album Middle Class Revolt. The Fall have also covered “higgledy-piggledy” for the Monks tribute CD Silver Monk Time.

All the members were American GIs stationed in Germany in the mid-sixties. They began playing together in 1964, calling themselves The Torquays. The Torquays differed little from stinctive name and image to go with it. At the beginning of 1965, Dave Day and Roger Johnston, on a whim, got their heads shaved into monks’ tonsures. The rest of the band followed their lead, and to complete the image, the band took to wearing a uniform - all black, sometimes in cassocks, with nooses worn as neckties. Eddie Shaw later claimed in his band autobiography “Black Monk Time” that the nooses were symbolic of the metaphorical nooses that all humanity wear.

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty Psychoviolets (The Ultraviolets)

Post  Spellbound Fri 2 May - 16:13

http://www.last.fm/music/Psychoviolets wrote:The Psychoviolets were a garage-rock band hailing from Lawrence, Kansas, active under various names from approximately 1982 through 1995.

The Psychoviolets began as a blues-rock band under the name of The Violet Blues. Sometime in the mid-80’s, they changed their name to The Ultraviolets, reflective of the evolution of their sound and the subject matter of their songs. They were picked up by German record label Music Maniac Records, and released their first LP, Changing Times, in 1990.

In 1992, the band signed with Restless Records. The rising fame of the California-based Ultraviolets prompted the band to again change their name. The re-christened Psychoviolets released their second album, Too Little Too Late, in the same year. This album inlcluded the songs “Stoned” and “End Of It All,” which would earn radio play in Chicago, Kansas City, and the band’s hometown of Lawrence.

In 1993, Music Maniac featured the Psychoviolets in their “Teen Trash” series, releasing a 20-track CD entitled, “Teen Trash, Vol. 2.” This CD included songs from the Changing Times LP, as well as several tracks from their Restless album, Too Little Too Late. It also included previously unreleased material.

The band struggled with internal troubles and infighting during the latter part of its career, resulting in the firing and re-hiring of members. These issues, along with problems caused by increasing drug abuse, would ultimately result in the band’s demise in about 1995.

Garage / Surf / Psychobilly / Beat - Page 7 Empty The Electric Mess

Post  innocent76 Sun 4 May - 16:20

http://www.theelectricmess.com/ABOUT_THE_ELECTRIC_MESS.html wrote:Since forming in 2007, The Electric Mess have developed into an exciting and tight rock n' roll band, led by an androgynous
and dynamic lead singer, Chip Fontaine (aka Esther Crow).

Their self-titled debut album, featuring "You've Become a Witch," "Trash Talkin' Woman," and "She Has a Funny
Walk," received excellent reviews and made it onto many "Best of 2010" lists. All 13 of its tracks have been heard on the radio,
both in the U.S. and internationally, including Rodney Bingenheimer's "Rodney on the ROQ" (KROQ, Los Angeles), "Little
Steven's Underground Radio Show" (Sirius/XM), and "Nights with Alice Cooper" (syndicated radio show).

Shindig! said: "There are a wide range of influences, including British Invasion, 60's garage, R&B, and psych, but it sure ain't
a mess... a very tight unit with bunch of strong tunes possessing a fine, melodic edge. This is a fine debut."

All-Music Guide: "**** of 5 stars: "(The Electric Mess) have the vintage approach and feel, they can write great songs, and
the band isn't afraid to hit ‘em hard and make their music move... Anyone who wonders if there's anything left to be said on
the garage revival scene ought to give The Electric Mess' debut a listen."

In 2011, Rowed Out Records (UK) issued a 7" of "You've Become a Witch/Trash Talkin' Woman" and "You've
Become a Witch" was featured on the CD/LP compilation "Hipsters Vol. 3" on Acid Jazz Records (UK), May, 2012

Their second album,"Falling Off the Face of the Earth," including the songs "He Looks Like a Psycho" and "The Girl
With the Expoding Dress" was released in May, 2012. Again, all 13 of its songs received radio airplay on U.S. and international
stations and received excellent reviews. It was released on vinyl June in 2012 on Groovie Records and is available on CD
and iTunes download.

In May, 2013, The Electric Mess had their first European tour, playing shows in Spain and Portugal. They will be
recording their 3rd record in March, called "House on Fire," and will be released on LP and CD from Soundflat Records
Spring 2014.
