Pebbles
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebbles_(series) wrote:Pebbles is an extensive series of compilation albums in both LP and CD formats that have been issued on several record labels, though mostly by AIP. Together with the companion Highs in the Mid-Sixties series, the Pebbles series made available over 800 obscure, mostly American "Original Punk Rock" songs recorded in the mid-1960s — primarily known today as the garage rock and psychedelic rock genres — that were previously known only to a handful of collectors. In 2007, the release of the Pebbles, Volume 11 CD marked the final album in the Pebbles series (Curiously, Vol 12 had been issued in 1999). The following year, Bomp! marked the 30th anniversary of the original Pebbles album with a spartan, limited-edition, clear-vinyl reissue complete with the original pink cover insert.
Back from the Grave
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_from_the_Grave_(series) wrote:Back from the Grave is a series compilation albums of 1960s garage rock created and compiled by Tim Warren [1] and released by Crypt Records. The series originally consisted of eight LP records released between 1983 and 1992. Volumes seven and eight were double albums. Starting in 1994, the series was reissued on compact disc. Due to the longer playing times offered by CDs, the first seven volumes were contained on four discs, save for a few tracks that were omitted. In addition, the eighth volume of the series was released on CD in 1994, with four tracks omitted from the vinyl version. As such, it is the only CD reissue from the series that closely corresponds to its vinyl counterpart. The eight vinyl albums are titled "Back From The Grave, Volume 1," etc. The five CDs are titled "Back From The Grave, Part 1," etc. The five CDs are Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 8. There are no 5, 6, or 7 for the CDs. Parts 1-4 correspond to the first seven vinyl albums, and Part 8 corresponds only to Volume 8. A volume 9 edition is currently in preparation.
V/A - HARMONY OF THE SPHERES [Drunken Fish, 1996]
A Bardo Pond - Sangh Seriatim
B Flying Saucer Attack - Since When
C Jessamine - 22:30
D Roy Montgomery - Fantasia on a Theme by Sandy Bull
E1 Loren Mazzacane Connors - Flames 1:5
E2 Loren Mazzacane Connors - The Gathering
E3 Loren Mazzacane Connors - Revolt!
E4 Loren Mazzacane Connors - Fand (a Tear)
F Charalambides - Naked in our Deathskins
"Just by looking at the lineup, it's obvious that this has got to be a great compilation, and it doesn't hurt that it was released on one of the foremost labels in the space-noise-drone-whatever you want to call it scene, at the height of most or all of these bands powers. This record is one half sprawling, spaced-out jams and one half noise-laden guitar improvisation. Each song was recorded exclusively for this comp, and most exceed the twenty minute mark. I won't go into what each offering sounds like, but if you know the work of any of the artists involved, then you know what to expect. Go get hopped-up on quualudes and enjoy the terrifying harmony."

Acid Drops, Spacedust & Flying Saucers: Psychedelic Confectionery
http://www.allmusic.com/album/acid-drops-spacedust-flying-saucers-psychedelic-confectionery-mw0000454060 wrote:lthough perhaps a little too similar to volume two of the highly regarded Nuggets series, Acid Drops, Spacedust, & Flying Saucers, compiled by the fine folks at Britain's (in fact, the world's) finest music magazine, Mojo, is the perfect introduction to the rise and fall of British psychedelia. Rather than chart the influence of British music on its surroundings and colonies (as done by Nuggets) Acid Drops takes an easier route. The Nuggets collection focused on all manner and strains of the old empire's R&B, freakbeat, mod, and psychedelic scenes, whilst Acid Drops dissects and inspects the solely British mutation from beat/pop (signified by the Kinks' quasi-raga "See My Friends") into full-blown psychedelia (from the most commercial to most underground of guises). For the hardened collector and avid fanatic, Space Dust will bring few surprises. There's a hefty weight of British hits and a delve through the type of major-label material that missed the mark at the time but has since become legendary through contributor Phil Smee's '80s psychedelic compilation series, Rubbles, that anyone bitten by the bug will be familiar with. What will make purchase of this -- it must be said, rather cheaply packaged box -- essential is the superior sound quality (all tracks have been remastered at Abbey Road) and the interesting liner booklet, which if not a little skimpy, features a superb essay in which Jon Savage chronicles the evolution and devolution of British music's most quirky, imaginative, and brief of genres.
Alongside the short running time (why the hell have EMI held back to only 18 tracks per CD, whilst Rhino made the effort to fill their Nuggets set to spilling point?) and minor quips, like the edited beginning of the Smoke's tremolo-infused classic "My Friend Jack" and the inclusion of the pretty much non-psychedelic "Granny Takes a Trip" by jug band the Purple Gang, this is still a very decent set which takes into account the different sides of U.K. psych. And as said, although rather preliminary for those seeking new thrills, this holds the very essence of the cause and effect the genre had on the changing face of the British music scene from 1965-1969. Practically none of this music has aged badly, and for some reason, however pompous and ridiculous a lot is, it still sounds as invigorating as the day it was recorded. Timeless.
Monsters, Robots and Bug Men [Virgin, 1996]
"Post-rock was still somewhat young when Monsters, Robots and Bug Men came along, and this compilation, subtitled "A User's Guide to the Rock Hinterland," is a real peach, showcasing bands from all over the musical map that somehow magically fall under the "post-rock" umbrella, from the shoegazing of Bowery Electric, Bardo Pond, and Jessamine to the mutant-dub of God and Godflesh, to the ambient drift of Flying Saucer Attack and Labradford. And while continuously mixed, the track order is mildly schizophrenic. But that's the point. In a post-rock world, the sunny psychedelic pop of Mercury Rev's "Everlasting Arm" can meld seamlessly into Flying Saucer Attack's dark-ambient "Feedback Song." Stereolab's motorik mantra "Les Yper-Yper Sound" can slide into Cul de Sac's Can homage, "Doldrums" and no one bats an eye. Nor should they. Attempting to condense a genre that encompasses everything into 155 minutes is a thankless task, but this album acquits itself admirably. While the compilation suffers from the fact that all of its tracks are readily available elsewhere, this is a great introduction to the genre."

ANTIPODEAN SCREAMS VOL.2
Australia has been a hotbed of garage rock since the days of bands like The Elois, The Missing Links and The Wild Cherries in the sixties, a line that runs through much of Citadel Records’ 80s output, and up to the present day. Melbourne store/label Off The Hip seem to be the current keepers of the flame, and this double disc, trans-Tasman compilation shows the genre is very much alive and well. Pulling together 37 (37!) cuts of basic Nuggets-y rock, with big names mixing it with unknowns, it’s a fuzz-drenched road map through the varied state of the scene today.

Punk 45 collects rare, obscure, or outright classic single releases from the earliest days of punk, proto-punk, art rock, and all other middle ground of the raw, angry, and exuberant early years of 1973-1980. VA - The Best Of Your Secret's Safe With Us (1982)
