Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty Blue in Heaven

Post  Spellbound Mon 10 Nov - 23:02

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_in_Heaven wrote:Blue in Heaven was an Irish rock quartet from Churchtown, Dublin, Ireland, active 1982–1989 and led by singer Shane O'Neill. They reformed in 1990 as The Blue Angels. O'Neill later went on to form Supernaut with Dave Long from Into Paradise.

Blue in Heaven released a few singles on U2's Mother Records before being signed to Island Records in 1985, when they released their first album, All The Gods Men, which was produced by Martin Hannett.

Their follow-up, Explicit Material (1986), saw them team up with Island Records chief Chris Blackwell and Eric Thorngren. Their popularity grew thanks to touring with The Chameleons, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Damned, alongside achieving a minor hit with "I Just Wanna".

Kieran Kennedy joined and they played concerts for two years. They released an EP on the Solid label, Rock 'n' Roll R.I.P., which was a chronological compilation of their work: a 1983 track ("On and On") produced by The Edge, four from 1987 and a live cover of The Stooges's song "Loose." Kennedy left to start the Black Velvet Band.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty The Flowers

Post  Spellbound Tue 25 Nov - 23:15

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Flowers wrote:he Flowers (1979-1980) were a Post-Punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland who recorded for Bob Last’s FAST Product and Pop Aural record labels. They featured Hilary Morrison on vocals (also the wife of Bob Last) and drummer Simon Best, who was connected to Leeds Post-Punk pioneers The Mekons and Delta 5. They made their first recorded appearance on FAST Product compilation “Earcom 1” and that was then followed by two singles for Pop Aural. They were also featured on the American and Canadian versions of the FAST singles compilation “Mutant Pop”. Unfortunately they never got around to recording a full-length album and presumedly broke-up around 1980/81. Singer Hilary Morrison was also featured singing backup vocals on two other Pop Aural singles, Restricted Code’s “First Night On” (1980) and The Fire Engines’ “Big Gold Dream” (1981).

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty The Cultural Decay

Post  Spellbound Sat 29 Nov - 23:27

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Cultural+Decay wrote:Belgian post-punk band Cultural Decay existed from 1980-1982. The band’s collective discography is comprised of a highly sought after 7” single and two song 12” EP. The latter was produced and features additional accompaniment by future Revolting Cocks co-founder Luc Van Acker. The band played a total of 15 gigs in local clubs—with like minded Belgian acts such as Struggler, De Brassers, and Siglo XX—before disbanding. Almost three decades later, New York label Sacred Bones Records decided to re-release these recordings along with some never released demos. The compilation ‘Eight Ways To Start A Day’ features 7 (LP-version) and 12 (CD-version) tracks.

http://www.last.fm/music/Blitz/+wiki wrote:Blitz were a British punk band who had enjoyed success in the indie charts in the early 1980’s. They were often lumped in with oi bands such as Cockney Rejects; however, with the release of the “New Age” single and their second album Second Empire Justice, Blitz shifted from their punk roots to a much more new wave and post punk-electro sound. They came from New Mills in Derbyshire and were enthusiastically championed by music journalist Garry Bushell.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty In a Lonely Place

Post  Spellbound Mon 29 Dec - 1:50

http://www.last.fm/music/In+a+Lonely+Place wrote:
Plenty of bands follow in the footsteps of sullen post-punk demigods Joy Division, staging minimally bombastic runs of icy melodies, murmured vocals and driving bass lines. But every once in a while one of these gothic post-punk revivalists rises head and shoulders above the Curtis & Co.-worshiping masses, furthering the ideas of the genre and refining its own sound along the way. Here we have In a Lonely Place, a Moscow-based duo that exceeds many of its international peers. It seems to be amping up its approach from the band’s promising self-released debut EP. “The Pray,” taken from the duo’s upcoming, debut Mess full-length on Vagueness, exemplifies In a Lonely Place’s drive, plowing through its four-minute run with succinct urgency. Almost resembling a sped-up version of the band’s namesake, “The Pray” brings with it a sense of isolation without coming off as desolate or abandoned. Better still, you can actually dance to the grooves within.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty Second Layer

Post  Spellbound Sat 3 Jan - 23:33

http://www.last.fm/music/Second+Layer wrote:Second Layer was an electronic-based outlet for The Sound’s Adrian Borland and Graham Bailey. Borland supplied guitars and vocals while Bailey provided keyboards, bass, and drum programming. The full length album World of Rubber was issued in 1981, after two EPs “Flesh as Property” (1979) and “State of Emergency” (1980). Since the duo was central to The Sound’s sound, their side project retained some of that feel, albeit in a slightly detached fashion that’s to be expected when synths and drum machines replace more human elements.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty Corners

Post  Spellbound Tue 3 Feb - 22:31

https://www.facebook.com/CORNERSCA/info?tab=page_info wrote:Originally from the San Fernando Valley and eventually relocating to Echo Park, CA, Corners began playing high-energy shows around Los Angeles in 2011. Singer and guitar player Tracy Bryant founded the band and began playing music with drummer Rick Mabery and Billy Changer on bass. Bryant and Changer met at The Smell, an important DIY community venue where music enthusiasts can really bond over similar interests…admitting that if it weren’t for The Smell, they probably wouldn’t be a band. The current lineup solidified when Jeff "Jeffertiti" Ramuno (Of Jeffertitis Nile/touring bassist of Father John Misty) began playing guitar and synth with the band. All four current members also connected through their shared love of Joy Division. Influenced by late 1970s punk and 1980s post-punk music and a deep fascination with the type of music made in those eras, Corners began to shift their own sound in that same direction.

Their 2012 Beyond Way release was a more surf-inspired garage rock album, while the upcoming release Maxed Out On Distraction (October 7th, 2014) is a synth-inspired post-punk album in the Internet age. Mastered by Dave Cooley (Silversun Pickups, MF Doom, The Black Angels, M83), album title itself is a reflection of living in the Internet age and literally not having any room in your life for more distractions. Singer Tracy Bryant explains, “The album title relates to the music in the way we approached making the album itself… blocking out everything else and focusing on making pure music, not being distracted with the constant addiction that social networking sites have become.”

Corners are one of the first bands to sprout from the Echo Park-based label, Lolipop Records and have been playing shows extensively around the Los Angeles area since 2012. They are truly bringing something very refreshing and significant to the table with Maxed Out On Distractions, which is being released on vinyl and CD via Lolipop Records and co-released on cassette via Lolipop and Burger Records. The album follows up the sold out Tracy Bryant/Billy Changer split solo tape that the two band members just released on Burger Records, and is a sign of bigger and better things to come. After touring the country this summer as part of the Lolipop Adventure Tour 2014, they are unquestionably making themselves known outside of the Los Angeles underground music scene.

A track very popular with the radio- and club-DJ’s was “The Cat”, which was remixed and released as a second 12”. 1987 saw the release of the follow-up album “A Monument of Trust” and the single “A Mirage”, a catchy tune that made the top 10 in Spain.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty Bill Direen & The Builders

Post  Spellbound Sun 15 Feb - 21:28

http://www.discogs.com/artist/659984-Builders wrote:New Zealand band formed in 1980. Several 7" singles and EPs led to the first Flying Nun Records album to be recorded. Beaten Hearts was recorded before Ego Gratification by Chris Knox (the first FN LP) but is the second Flying Nun album to be released commercially (January 1983).
Bill forms South Indies Records the following year to archive music in the post-punk independent spirit. In fact Roger Shepherd was considering releasing Split Seconds, but he was advised it wasn't good enough in terms of studio-quality and he wanted to move up in terms of studio-quality - so Bill Direen did it himself. Subsequent Builders albums are released on South Indies. CoNCH3, Split Seconds and Beaten Hearts (repurchased) are the biggest selling of the Builders releases.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 8 Empty A Spectre Is Haunting Europe

Post  innocent76 Sat 4 Apr - 12:05

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Spectre_Is_Haunting_Europe wrote:A Spectre Is Haunting Europe formed in 2002, during the height of Vancouver's post-punk revival, and were initially billed as Decora. The band's activity was intermittent for the first two years, due mainly to lineup changes and the band's cross-membership with electropunk outfit Alunared (usually spelled aLUnARED). The name refers to the first sentence of The Communist Manifesto.

It was not until 2004 that the band found a niche with its brand of politicized post-punk and subsequently changed its name to A Spectre Is Haunting Europe. Their first album, Astonishing Tales of the Sea, was released that year. Through a succession of different drummers, the band stretched this material in a few different directions at once, culminating in a caustic 2004 appearance at the Drop Dead Festival in New York City. In early 2006, former Skinny Puppy member Phil Western joined the group as drummer.

With their 2006 album, Flames, the band broadened their audience to include a more general indie rock audience. Their recordings have been reviewed extensively in music media.

In 2008 the band released its third album (Embers) as a creative commons free digital release.
