Siglo XX
http://www.last.fm/music/Siglo+XX wrote:Genk, Belgium (1978 – 1989)
Siglo XX is a Belgian group from Genk who made gloomy and doomy coldwave music à la Joy Division in the eighties .
Their name (which can both be pronounced as Siglo Iks Iks or as Siglo Vingt) stems from an anarchist movement during the Spanish civil war.
Their second single “The Art of War” got the group a small but very loyal following that remained faithful to the group all through the eighties.
The Skull Defekts

Deep Freeze Mice
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Deep+Freeze+Mice wrote:The Deep Freeze Mice were an English New Wave band that were active between 1979 and 1989. They were based in Leicester, and consisted of the core members Alan Jenkins (guitars and singing), Sherree Lawrence (organ and other keyboards), and Mick Bunnage (bass guitar). The band had two different drummers over the years: Graham Summers and Pete Gregory.
The band released 10 albums during their existence on their own Cordelia Records label. Their music was odd, often consisting of absurd and surreal lyrics delivered in Alan’s deadpan voice accompanied by bouncy pop/progressive rock music. Favoured lyrical concerns included animal rights, conformity, and science fiction.
Alan Jenkins was also a member of The Chrysanthemums in the late 1980’s, and joined up with members of Po! and The Ammonites in Jody & The Creams (later as “Alan Jenkins & The Creams”) and Ruth’s Refrigerator. He has played guitar with The Thurston Lava Tube since 2001.

Into Paradise
http://www.last.fm/music/Into+Paradise wrote:Into Paradise were an alternative-rock band from Dublin, Ireland, and were originally called Backwards Into Paradise (1986-88). Their key members included Dave Long and Rachel Tighe.
They began their recording life with the then-tiny Irish label, Setanta, home of Divine Comedy. Their first album was ‘Under The Water’ which sold modestly, before the major-label intervention by Ensign and the release of ‘Churchtown’ in 1991. Produced by ex-Sound lynch-pin, Adrian Borland, its related singles failed to sell with ‘Burns My Skin’ being banned from domestic radio due to the Gulf War.
Its follow-up ‘Angel’ fared little better, despite sporting a superior version of ‘Sleep’ as its B-side - the band were promptly dropped when Ensign was wound up by its parent Chrysalis a while later. During their time on Ensign, they covered the Magazine song ‘Shot By Both Sides’ as a B-side, almost pre-empting the eventual recognition that Howard Devoto’s band were to receive in the early 21st century. ‘Churchtown’ and ‘Under The Water’ have yet to be re-issued in re-mastered form.
The band eventually moved back to Setanta and released a pair of mini-albums in 1992/93, ‘Down All The Days’ and ‘For No One’ before calling it a day in 1994. Their final single, ‘Angelus’, was released only on 7” which possibly helped its passage into the rare collectables listings early on.
David Long is set to release a solo album ‘Water Has Memory’ in early 2013.

“The Grinning Plowman were a little known/very overlooked band from Nashville, TN. They had 3 full-length releases and a single which was for this song. From the little information I’ve been able to find out about them online, it sounds like they disbanded back in 1993. Their second record, “I Play Jupiter” on Carlyle Records, is the only release of theirs that I’ve actually been able to find. I picked up a promo copy years ago along with an “I Play Jupiter” pin which I should try and track down one of these days.”
The entire catalog by the Grinning Plowman is now available on-line for download from Spat! Records in Nashville. Releases include, “Days Of Deformity” “I Play Jupiter” and “Nothing Is Ever What It Is”. “I Play Jupiter” is now available on CD from Amazon.com’s new disc on demand program courtesy of Spat! Records as well for those who want a physical copy.

MESSER
The group Messer lives in Münster (Germany). The demo tape and the single has already hit some waves. First associations are two german Postpunk 80s Icons – Blumfeld (very early) and Fehlfarben (the first record). Some may feel reminiscent to the voice of Rio Reiser and sometimes you hear slight ideas of die Kolossale Jugend. Messer are brittle, clank, mysterious, shattered and nevertheless the record spins tremendously. The Beats are jagged, the Bass drives the herd uncompromisingly forward. Melodic, but always tight. At times the guitar seems to escape into delay- and noise-sounds. At this point you realize that there is another pillar to the sound of Messer than “just” (German) Post-Punk of 80’s/90’s: Neu! or Can can be found here as well. But it is almost ever dark within Messer, improvisation is never hippiesk, but always delirium-dreamlike and monotone – expressionists at work. Therefore: „The artist wants to display his experience for the viewer“(Wikipedia). Nervous doubts as an outline, now and then filled with mysterious fluffyness, pictorially, dark lyrics all formed into a perfect blade. This can be found in the kitchen drawer or on your neck.
I think of opium, the “Weimarer Republik”, the surrealists that wanted to bring down all of civil society
Insomnia, rejection, distance, dourness, being a misfit. Sometimes it sounds very tired by repetition, then again very angry. Morbid fascination on depression. Im Schwindel.
Messer sing about „die Wut, die mich zerfrisst, weil das Leben eine Lüge ist“. And because real, not staged rage these days has become a rare thing in music, I predict: This band will divide opinions. One half will think it’s great what these guys do, the other half has no idea what this is about. And so I say: Bravo!« – Herr Neumann

The Comsat Angels
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comsat_Angels wrote:The Comsat Angels were an English post-punk band from Sheffield and Doncaster, England, initially active from 1978 to 1995.[1] Their music has been described as "abstract pop songs with spare instrumentation, many of which were bleak and filled with some form of heartache."[2] They have been credited as being an influence to later post-punk revival bands such as Blacklist, Bell Hollow, Editors and Interpol.[3] The Comsat Angels toured heavily in the UK and in western Europe, especially in the Netherlands. They also toured the United States twice.[4] Their music has been extensively reissued and recompiled since 1995 by various record labels.
Bad Baby
http://www.systemsofromance.com/blog/2011/03/bad-baby-st-the-second-coming-lps/ wrote:a four piece from Hamburg. Cold guitar wave galore across two full records, released almost back to back. I tend to prefer the self-titled debut, but still find lots to love about their second 12”, which is the more commonly found of the two. Not much development in sound across these releases, just solid gloomy treasures that should be perfect for fans of Snake Corps, Blue In Heaven, Choir Invisible, Modern Eon etc.
Flue
http://www.last.fm/music/FLUE wrote:Flue was a post-punk band from Netherlands, active in the 1980s and signed to the Dutch label Torso.
Their music is a mixture of coldwave and guitar new wave with strong sober melodies and a dark feel. The band consisted of four members: Edward Gijsen (vocals, guitar, synth), Judith Smorenberg (synth), Jerome (bass) and Hans (drums). Flue released two albums: “One and a Half” in 1981, and “Vista” in 1983, both were issued on vinyl only and are extremely hard to find nowadays. “One and a Half” has been digitally remastered and expanded with 7 rare bonus tracks.

2006
- The Exploding Boy is a indie/post-punk band formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 2006 by Johan Sjöblom (Prune, Fake Moss) and Les Andersson (Kodji, Run Level Zero).
- First demo-recording reached electronic-pop-queen Sophie Rimheden that took the band to her hears and offered to produce the next coming material.
- In March of 2006 the demand of seeing the band was huge. New member was added and the first rehearsal as a full band was done on the 5th of April the same year.
- The Exploding Boy made their live debut at Fight Club in Stockholm, Sweden the 5th of May, one month after the first rehearsal, and only 5 month after the start of the band. The gig was totally sold out.
- Within the first six month the band had been interviewed by both radio and TV and done several interviews for different magazines.
- In September of 2006 the band went into Big Island Studios (most famous for their work with German band Rammstein and Swedish acts like Mustasch and Covenant) together with producer and technician Tom Van Heesch.
2007
- On the bands one year anniversary of their first rehearsal they released their self titled debut album.
- During the spring and summer of 2007 the band did several live shows to support their well acclaimed album.
2008
- In the beginning of 2008 the band reassembled, now as a four piece band, but still with the same energy and catchy pop/rock tunes.
