Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty Disappears

Post  Spellbound Tue 15 Apr - 16:25

http://www.last.fm/music/Disappears wrote:Carving out a space somewhere in the middle of garage-punk snarl, shoegaze haze, and Krautrock grooves, Chicago’s Disappears features Brian Case (also of the Ponys and 90 Day Men), Boas members Graeme Gibson and Jonathan van Herik, and Damon Carruesco. The band started when Case’s other groups were on hiatus and he was recording demos with Gibson; Gibson brought van Herik into the project, and in turn, van Herik brought Carruesco into the fold. Soon after forming, the band self-released a series of 7” singles with artwork based on Can’s album Delay 1968, and made their material available for free on the Internet

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty The Southern Death Cult

Post  Spellbound Sat 19 Apr - 13:56

http://www.last.fm/music/The+Southern+Death+Cult wrote:The Southern Death Cult was a gothic rock band in the early 1980s. It is now primarily known for having given its lead singer and parts of its name to the multi-platinum hard rock band The Cult. Despite the similarities in the names, “Southern Death Cult” was distinct from “Death Cult”/”The Cult”.

The Southern Death Cult emerged from the ashes of the seminal Bradford punk band Violation. In place at that time were Aki Nawaz-drums, Barry Jepson-bass, Mick-guitar & Mick Brady-vocals.

He recorded his first LP And He’s Not Gonna Take It Anymore at Beat Farm studio, and released it in October 1986 on the Cleveland Co-op St. Valentine Records.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty TC Matic

Post  innocent76 Tue 22 Apr - 0:14

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TC_Matic wrote:The band has its origin in the duo Tjens-Couter, composed of Arno Hintjens and guitarist Paul Decoutere,[2] which played rhythm and blues[3] since the early 1970s, and in 1974 had acquired a bassist and a drummer. Under the name "Freckle Face" two albums were released (Who Cares (1975) and Plat du Jour (1978)).[4] In 1980, the group was renamed TC Matic;[5] Decoutere was soon replaced by Jean-Marie Aerts, who cooperated with Hintjens in the majority of the band's compositions and produced the first three albums.[5] Their debut album, TC Matic, was described as a mixture between Killing Joke and Gang of Four;[6] they scored an early hit in Belgium with "Oh La La La" in 1981,[1] and another with "Putain Putain" from 1983's Choco.[7][8]

In 1984, the Dutch bass player Michael Peet replaced Ferre Baelen. In 1985, the band toured Europe, opening for the Simple Minds,[5] a tour which proved that Belgian bands could attain commercial success outside the country.[9] A final album, Ye Ye, was produced by Howard Gray. The band broke up in 1986.[5]

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty Grauzone

Post  innocent76 Fri 25 Apr - 20:22

http://www.last.fm/music/Grauzone wrote:Grauzone was an 80’s Swiss band composed of 3 musicians : Marco Repetto and two brothers, Stephan Eicher and Martin Eicher. At the end of 1979 Marco Repetto (drums) and GT (bass) left the Punk band Glueams, to form together with Martin Eicher (guitar, vovals, synthesizer) a new band called Grauzone. Martin had already supported Glueams on their single mental. They gave their first concert in March 1980 at the club Spex in Berne, Switzerland. Martin’s brother Stephan Eicher (guitar, synthesizer) and Claudine Chirac (saxophone) supplemented the group temporarily in live appearances and recordings.

After ten concerts, four singles and an album the group split up at the end of 1982. GT and Marco Repetto formed together with the former Glueams guitarist Martin Pavlinec and the drummer Dominique Uldry, the band „Missing Link“, later „Eigernordwand“. GT supplemented the futurism oriented performance group „Red Catholic Orthodox Jewish Chorus “ around performance artist Edy Marconi, in which occasionally Marco Repetto also played. Later the group changed their name to „I Suonatori“. Stephan Eicher started a successful solo career. 1988 published Martin Eicher his solo-EP „Spellbound Lovers“. Marco Repetto started in 1989 a new career as Techno and Ambient DJ, musician and producer (a.o. mittageisen v2). The band is most famous for their 1981 hit “Eisbär” (“Polar Bear”), which was later covered by the French band Nouvelle Vague. The single went to #12 in Germany and #6 in Austria.

After leaving the group, Stephan Eicher embarked on a solo career in France.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty Five Or Six

Post  Spellbound Mon 28 Apr - 18:55

http://www.last.fm/music/Five+Or+Six wrote:Five or Six was a UK (Richmond/Sheen/Kingston/West London) post-punk band, originally signed to Cherry Red Records. The original line-up was fluid, and apart from their key contribution to the best-selling compilation album Pillows & Prayers, they are perhaps most notable for the various activities of former members. However, from 1981, a stable core of David Harper, Daniel Whittock, Ashley Wales and David Knight developed. They carved a strong following in the BeNeLux areas through constant touring of established venues and squat art centres.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty Pink Turns Blue

Post  innocent76 Tue 29 Apr - 22:40

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Turns_Blue wrote:Pink Turns Blue are an influential band from Cologne, Germany. Formed in 1985, they quickly put out their first LP, If Two Worlds Kiss expressing a sound reminiscent of New Wave with very dark undertones and use of synthesizers, only to become one of the pioneers of the developing sub-genre of dark wave.

After many hits like "Michelle", "Walking On Both Sides", "Your Master Is Calling", "The First", "I Coldly Stare Out", "Touch The Skies", "Catholic Sunday", "Missing You", "If Two Worlds Kiss", "Moon" and "Seven Years", they split up in 1995. In 2003, they reformed to appear in a few festivals. Because of the success of the reunion, they released a Best Of album called Re-Union, and in 2005 their studio album Phoenix.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty The Bolshoi

Post  Spellbound Wed 14 May - 21:01

http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-bolshoi-mn0000936195/biography wrote:The British band the Bolshoi flirted with gothic rock without succumbing to the genre's limitations. The group formed in 1984 after Trevor Tanner (vocals, guitar) and Jan Kalicki (drums) hitchhiked to Woolwich, England, to find stardom. With the addition of bassist Nick Chown, the Bolshoi opened up for bands such as the Cult, the Lords of the New Church, Wall of Voodoo, and the March Violets. In 1985, the Bolshoi released the EP Giants, and songs like "Happy Boy" and "Fly" defined the group's early sound -- stark, ominous guitars and morose narratives. Keyboardist Paul Clark joined the band before they recorded their first album, Friends, for Beggars Banquet in 1986. Distributed in America by I.R.S., the soaring single "A Way" garnered the band a loyal following on college stations and it was a hit in dance clubs as well. A year later a remixed version of "A Way" was included on the soundtrack of Something Wild. The Bolshoi toured with Peter Murphy and Spear of Destiny and then recorded their second album, Lindy's Party. With radio-friendly tracks such as "Please" and "T.V. Man," Lindy's Party enjoyed more airplay than the Bolshoi's previous efforts. In addition, Lindy's Party sheared the group's gothic leanings, opting for synth-driven pop that would expand their commercial appeal, but English critics continued to praise Tanner's taut songwriting. Nevertheless, deciding it was no longer fun working together, the band broke up shortly after its release. Clark moved to Seattle and became involved in electronic music. After a lengthy hiatus, Tanner returned to the studio to record Master of the World in 1998. Tanner reunited with Clark on the track "Majorette," and "Master of the World" was featured on Away...Best of the Bolshoi, a retrospective of the group's career, in 1999.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty The Del-Byzanteens

Post  innocent76 Fri 16 May - 23:59

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Del-Byzanteens wrote:The Del-Byzanteens was a New York-based No Wave band active in the early 1980s. The band comprised Phil Kline (vocals, guitar); Jim Jarmusch (vocals, keyboards); Philippe Hagen (bass); Josh Braun (percussion, drums); and Dan Braun (drums, percussion). Luc Sante wrote the lyrics to some of their songs, while James Nares sometimes contributed as a percussionist, and occasionally John Lurie performed with them on stage.

They released a 12" EP: Girl's Imagination (1981), an LP: Lies To Live By (1982), and a 7" single: Draft Riot (1982). In 1985-86 they recorded two more songs ("The Last Time" and "Fascination"), which were never finished or officially released.[1]

"At that time everyone in New York had a band," Jarmusch recalled in an interview The Washington Post (1984). "The idea was that you didn't have to be a virtuoso musician to have a band. The spirit was more important than having technical expertise, and that influenced a lot of filmmakers."[2] According to Sante, they were "a band that insouciantly blended high and low, virtuosity and amateurism, calypso and science fiction, pots and pans and drones and the Supremes. They released several records, on a British label, which did very well in the former Yugoslavia."[3]

They played a number of concerts at clubs such as CBGB, Hurrah and the Mudd Club in New York City. Two of their songs were featured in Wim Wenders' 1982 film The State of Things. At the time, Hot Press said that their debut LP was "a debut equal to anything out of New York these past six years", and Melody Maker described it as "mighty stuff... You are strongly urged to investigate this record... outstanding."[4] Like the filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, many of its members have gone on to become famous in their own right, making music (Phil Kline), art (James Nares), and writing (Luc Sante).

Their back catalogue has never been re-issued on CD, and Del-Byzaneens vinyl is a rare sight on the second-hand market. However, "Girl's Imagination" was featured on the Beggars Banquet's 1999 compilation Pspyched!, and again on the Gomma compilation Anti-NY in 2001, while "My Hands Are Yellow (from the job that i do)" was released on New York Noise Vol 2, in 2003. Three of their shows at the Hurrah club were filmed, in their entirety, by Merrill Aldighieri. In early 2011 she released a 52 minute "hand-made" DVD, "Eskimo Lounge Music", featuring live footage from these performances, interfoiled with recent interviews with the band members.[5]

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty The Names

Post  innocent76 Sat 17 May - 0:22

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Names_(band) wrote:The early lineup of the band featured Smordynia, guitarist Marc Deprez, and drummer/keyboard player Mike S. Christophe Den Tandt, with Robert Frankson and singer Isabelle Hanrez also briefly being members.[1][2] After local gigs as The Passengers, they changed their name in time for their debut single, "Spectators of Life", released by WEA in 1979 to test the market for home-grown new wave music.

The band were keen to sign to a British label, and connected with Factory Records at a Joy Division gig at the Plan K venue in Brussels.[2] The Names recorded "Nightshift" in Manchester in August 1980, with producer Martin Hannett, now with drummer Luc Capelle in the band.[1] The single was representative of their overall sound: dark, controlled modern rock in the mould of Magazine, Comsat Angels and Joy Division/early New Order. It peaked at number 35 on the UK Indie Chart.[3] In February 1982 the band recorded a session for John Peel's BBC Radio 1 show.[4]

The Names enjoyed a long and rewarding relationship with mercurial producer Hannett, who also oversaw their next single "Calcutta" (Factory Benelux, 1981) and debut album Swimming (Les Disques du Crepuscule, 1982; reissued several times since).[2] A motorcycle accident for Capelle saw Michel Silverstein step in as a replacement while he recovered.[2]

The group played live mostly in the Benelux countries and France, including the ambitious Crepuscule multimedia package Dialogue North-South in February 1982. The group had also been booked to appear in Manchester in July 1980 as support to A Certain Ratio at the Beach Club. When The Names were delayed, New Order stepped in for their first live performance after the end of Joy Division.

A final Names single, "The Astronaut", appeared in 1982,[1] again produced by Hannett, who had by then split from Factory Records. However the post-punk era was ending, and the band split.[1]

In 1995 the original core trio of Smordynia, Deprez and Christophe Den Tandt (keyboards) reunited as Jazz, releasing one album, Nightvision.[2]

In December 2007, The Names reunited for a gig during A Factory Night (once again). In April 2009, they released a new album, Monsters Next Door, on the Str8line label.[5] Christophe Den Tandt left the band in December 2009 and was replaced by Christophe Boulenger. Since then, The Names have appeared live in Italy and France.

Post-Punk / New Wave - Page 5 Empty Television Personalities

Post  innocent76 Sat 17 May - 0:25

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_Personalities wrote:The Television Personalities are an English rock group with a varying line-up. The only constant member is singer–songwriter Dan Treacy (born 19 June 1960), who uses the band as a vehicle for his music. The band's first release (January 1978) was the single "14th Floor"/"Oxford Street W1", while their second, the EP Where's Bill Grundy Now? features one of their best-known songs, "Part Time Punks".

The Television Personalities' first album ...And Don't The Kids Just Love It was released in 1981. It set the template for their subsequent career: neo-psychedelia, an obsession with youth culture of the 1960s, a fey, slightly camp lyrical attitude, and the occasional classic pop song. Their second album Mummy Your Not Watching Me [sic] demonstrated increased psychedelic influences. Their third album, entitled They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles showed Treacy's sense of humour; the TVPs were never to have any major commercial success in the UK – although their albums sold respectably in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands. The first three albums featured Treacy and schoolmate Ed Ball; Ball left the band[when?] to found The Times, but rejoined in 2004.

The band were offered the support slot on Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour's 1984 UK solo dates, but were promptly dropped after reading out former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett's home address.[3]

The 1984 album The Painted Word was unexpectedly dark in content, reflecting Treacy's despair at Thatcherite Britain and his personal circumstances.

Various lineup changes prevented their next album (Privilege) from appearing until 1990. Their subsequent album Closer to God was a combination of fey sixties style pop and darker material, similar in tone to The Painted Word.

The album Don't Cry Baby, It's Only a Movie was released in 1998.

From 1998 to June 2004, Dan Treacy was incarcerated for shoplifting to feed his drug habit. He spent time aboard HM Prison ship Weare in Portland Harbour, Dorset, England. He has referred to the Weare as "The Good Ship Lollipop". The experience helped him put his life and career back on track.[4][5][6]

In February 2006, a new TVPs album, My Dark Places was released. Despite their relatively small independent sales, the TVPs were very influential on British music in the 1980s, especially the so-called C86 generation and many of the bands on Creation Records.

In an article in The Guardian on 24 April 2006, it was implied that Dan Treacy was in some way behind the Arctic Monkeys, although this was based on little more than a perceived similarity between their lyrical style and that of Treacy, and the fact that the lead singer of Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner is not credited with the band's songwriting.[7]

It was reported in October 2011 that Treacy was seriously ill after an operation to remove a blood clot from his brain.[8]
