Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 2 Empty Click (Click Horning)

Post  Spellbound Fri 28 Mar - 17:09

http://www.clickhorning.com/ wrote:The Lake Sunapee, NH region has always had more than its share of musicians. Maybe it's the mountain air or maybe it's the scenery, but something keeps them coming back. Just ask Click Horning, New London's singer songwriter who left when he was seventeen for the Big Apple. Twelve years, a record contract and an album later it was time to come back. Early influences were Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Peter Paul & Mary, as well as rock and roll and R&B
that he listened to growing up.

http://www.last.fm/music/Jesse+Sykes+&+The+Sweet+Hereafter wrote:Seattle, United States (2002 – present)

Jesse Sykes is a Seattle-based singer-songwriter. Her backing band is The Sweet Hereafter, which features Phil Wandscher (late of Whiskeytown) on guitar.

In 2002 they christened their “collective” Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter.

Jesse Sykes belonged to another band, Hominy, along with her former husband Jim Sykes, who played guitar. The band released a self-titled album in 1998 on the Ivy label. Other members of The Sweet Hereafter include Anne Marie Ruljancich (also of the Walkabouts), Bill Herzog on bass, Kevin Warner on drums (for the first two albums) and currently Eric Eagle on drums. Most recently Jesse contributed vocals and co-wrote the song “The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep)” from the Sunn O))) & Boris collaboration album Altar. Bill Herzog, Phil Wandescher also contributed to Altar.

More famous as the frontman of New Model Army his solo work is often sadly overlooked. His voice is given more emphasis than in the bands material, with some breathtakingly emotional lyrics accompanied by gentle acoustic guitar and soaring strings.

His music stands up to – and sometimes over – the work of John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Graham Parsons. In short, it sounds like it’s already famous.”

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 2 Empty Revolution 9

Post  innocent76 Tue 22 Apr - 16:36

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Moore_(musician) wrote:John Moore joined the Jesus and Mary Chain in 1986, succeeding Bobby Gillespie on drum duties, later moving to guitar.[1] When he left the Jesus and Mary Chain in 1988, he formed John Moore & The Expressway,[1] releasing two albums.[2] He later formed a new band called Revolution 9 who released several singles, and one album You Might As Well Live.

In 1997 he formed Black Box Recorder with Luke Haines and Sarah Nixey. The band released three studio albums: England Made Me, The Facts of Life and Passionoia, as well as a compilation The Worst of Black Box Recorder. The single "The Facts of Life" reached number 20 in the UK chart and the band appeared on Top Of The Pops.

In 2005, he released an album, Half Awake on his own The Germ Organization label.[2]

Following a 2007 collaboration with Art Brut and an appearance at the Nick Sanderson (Earl Brutus) tribute concert in October 2008, it was announced that Black Box Recorder would perform their first headlining gigs in five years during February 2009.

Moore is also known for his saw playing; he has played saw on both Art Brut albums, namely the 2007 single "Direct Hit".[3] Moore also occasionally plays saw at Haines' concerts.

Moore has also contributed articles to British newspaper The Guardian,[4] and also releases his own music through his Myspace page.[5]

In the 1990s, Moore was at the forefront of the revival of interest in absinthe.[6][7]

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 2 Empty Vikesh Kapoor

Post  Spellbound Sun 27 Apr - 17:35

https://www.facebook.com/vikeshkapoor/info wrote:Following a spur-of-the-moment cross-country trip with a pair of fiery European girls, Vikesh Kapoor left school for a brief yet inspiring stint as a mason’s apprentice. The America he had previously known resided narrowly between his childhood home in rural Pennsylvania and the New England university he left home for. Alongside his parents’ own immigrant struggles, these experiences quickly witnessed Kapoor to the scope of the American dream.

A few years later, Kapoor performed at Howard Zinn’s memorial service in Boston, in front of Zinn’s family and colleagues (including Noam Chomsky). Roused by Zinn’s lifelong battle against class/race injustice, Kapoor spent the next two years in Portland, Oregon working on his full-length debut record. The Ballad Of Willy Robbins, a concept album loosely based on a newspaper article, chronicles the brutal but hopeful story of a working class man who slowly loses everything: ambitions, health, family and shelter. It’s a worker’s tale, less specific to the blue-collar life as it is about anyone struggling to make something of themselves.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 2 Empty Greg Sage

Post  Spellbound Thu 1 May - 0:03

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Sage wrote:Greg Sage (born 1952) is an American songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist, regarded as an important influence on many punk rock and post-punk artists. Between 1977 and 1988, Sage was the principal songwriter of the influential Portland, Oregon-based band Wipers.
The mood of Sage's lyrics is frequently dark, and rife with references to confusion and severe alienation. His song structures often take unexpected turns and are typified by fractured melodic passages punctuated by massive, intricate guitar parts, usually played on a Gibson SG.

Folk / Singer-Songwriter - Page 2 Empty Mike Fiems

Post  Spellbound Sun 4 May - 10:55

http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2013/11/19/mike-fiems-i-would-dream-1974/ wrote:Wanting to “mellow” out in the early ’70s, Link Wray’s elder brother Vernon moved to Tucson, Arizona. There, he reassembled the infamous Wray brothers’ Three Track Shack, rechristening it his “Record Factory.” There, he recorded his classic, Wasted. In December 1973 and January 1974, he welcomed a Tucson-based songwriter named Mike Fiems into the Factory, where he served as the producer of Fiems’ I Would Dream. While the LP – recently posted in its entirety by the Tyme-Machine — shares a certain dusty sensibility with Wasted, also released on Tucson’s Vermillion Records in scarce quantity, I Would Dream is an entirely different beast than Wray’s busted heart record.

Mastered by a mysterious “Graybeard,” this is kaleidoscopic sunshine pop as played by sand-caked types. Fiems augments his natural child incantations with folk, soft rock and Sonoran country timbres. He plants his feet in two worlds, one wistful and one jagged. Opener “I Would Dream” sounds appropriately dazed, that is until Fiems curses and steers his sidemen – bassist Charlie Gould and guitarist/drummer Bill Kennedy – into rougher territory.

The lyrics, written by Fiems and his wife (or sister?) Coleen, are alternately naturalistic and doggedly rowdy. “The world is my woman, woman and my child,” Fiems sings on “My Lady,” with a piano that bears a resemblance to the elegiac barroom piano featured on Wray’s “Lonely Son.” Occasionally the record veers into theatrical territory: “Sing It” sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place in the hippie-fied Broadway musicals of the day. But mostly, Fiems mines a unique intersection between cosmic wanderings and rural grooves. words/ j woodbury
